Hormone Therapy

Many women experience vasomotor symptoms including hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sleep and mood disturbances during menopause. These symptoms can last for years and severely impact quality of life. Hormone therapy is the most effective treatment for women suffering with bothersome menopausal symptoms. It involves the use of estrogen and/or progesterone in a gel or pill.

What are the potential benefits?

The benefits of hormone therapy are far reaching and include both short-term and long-term reward. Short-term, hormone therapy helps to treat vasomotor symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood changes, and sleep disturbances. Long-term, hormone therapy helps to reduce the risk for osteoporosis, cardiovascular events, dementia, and it helps to improve body composition.

Who can use hormone therapy?

In order to qualify for hormone therapy patients must first undergo proper assessment to evaluate their individual risks and benefits for this treatment. In general, women who are within 10 years of their last menstrual period are good candidates for hormone therapy.
The risk for hormone therapy starts to outweigh the benefit once women are over 65 years old or past 10 years since their last menstrual period. This risk is largely a slight increase in cardiovascular disease.

Does hormone therapy cause cancer?

When used correctly and for the appropriate amount of time, hormone therapy does not increase the risk for cancer. The history of hormone therapy is controversial and filled with misinformation regarding cancer risk.
