2 common causes of menstrual cramps

Painful menstruation, also known as dysmenorrhea, is a common problem among young women.

The pain typically starts 1-2 days before the expected period and gradually lowers over the 12 to 72 hours. Most women report having pain in the lower abdomen, back, and thighs, with the severity ranging anywhere from mild to severe.

There are menstrual cramps that are caused by a specific condition, like endometriosis or fibroids, and then there are cramps that are not caused by any conditions but rather happen naturally.

Cramps that happen without any sort of disorder behind it are more likely to occur in young adolescent women, whereas cramps due to hormonal disorder are more likely to happen to women in their later reproductive years.

Ultrasound can be used to help us determine the root cause of the cramps so that we can refine the treatment plan.

In either case, natural medicine can be very useful in helping control the cramps depending on the level of severity. With the right diet and lifestyle, and medicines like ginger, I3C, calcium, vitamin D, and NAC menstrual cramps can be controlled and the quality of women's lives improved.
