I get a lot of questions on PMS, so I wanted to answer them all.
What is PMS?
Simply put, PMS is a set of symptoms that you experience before and during your period. Once bleeding is finished, these symptoms resolve entirely.
These symptoms most commonly include...
➡️ Bloating
➡️ Fatigue
➡️ Irritability
➡️ Depression
➡️ Anxiety
➡️ Cramping
Note: These symptoms should go away after your period stops. If they persist, this is not PMS.
Can hormonal imbalances cause PMS?
Yes and no. Let me explain...
When we compare women with PMS to women without PMS, their hormonal levels tend to be the same. The main difference that we see is that women with PMS are much more sensitive to the hormonal changes that occur throughout the cycle and approaching menses compared to women without PMS.
My mood is not great before my period, but during my period it really intensifies, what does that mean?
A lot of conditions get worse during menses, especially anxiety and depression. This could mean that you have an underlying condition which needs to be diagnosed and addressed. Remember, there are major hormonal changes occurring during menses and a lot of women are sensitive to them.
Should I do hormonal blood tests for my PMS?
Not necessarily. If all you have is PMS, hormonal tests are not going to add much benefit. However, if we're concerned that there are other hormonal things going on, then I would recommend it.
Are there natural solutions for PMS?
Yes! You don't have to put up with PMS. There are seriously effective natural medicines for PMS. Things like B6, fish oils, I3C, and vitex work really well. Remember, a solution for you may look different then it would for someone else. That is the power of customized medicine.
