The environment of the placenta is important to properly house a growing baby. Women who have unexplained recurrent miscarriages tend to have placenta's that are in a state of oxidative stress. This happens when there is more cellular damage then there are antioxidants to help it clean it up.
Based on this idea, researchers wondered if supplementing with an anti-oxidant would help prevent miscarriage and improve the chance for keeping the pregnancy in women who had already had past miscarriages. The anti-oxidant they tested was N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC).
What they found was amazing! Women who took NAC were more likely to keep their pregnancy and deliver a live baby. Given that NAC is safe drug to take, and safe during pregnancy, it can be a life saving supplement to give if a patient has had a history of multiple unexplained miscarriages!
