Hair loss is a common concern among many women. This often presents as hair loss all over the scalp or in specific areas of the scalp only. It can happen slowly over time or quickly within a short period of time, and can often cause significant distress for patients.
There are four common causes of hair loss which we evaluate for in our appointment.
The first is nutritional deficiencies. This is the most common cause we have found in our clinical practice among women suffering with hair loss. Women experiencing this form of hair loss often present with hair loss spread out throughout the entire scalp. This form of hair loss tends to occur over a longer period of time and can present with other symptoms including low energy, brittle nails, and dry skin.
The second is stress. When the body is under stress, its not concerned about keeping healthy hair follicles. As a result, hair follicles become undernourished causing hair loss. This form of hair loss usually occurs quickly and throughout the entire scalp.
The third is hormonal imbalances. Hormones like testosterone, DHT, and thyroid hormone can impact the hair follicles. Women presenting with this form of hair loss often have hair loss in the front scalp, and may present with other symptoms like acne, unwanted hair growth, low energy, weight gain, constipation, and dry skin.
The fourth is auto-immune disease. Auto-immune disease is also a leading cause of hair loss among women. This form of hair loss tends to occur quickly and results in bald patches throughout the scalp. It may present with a family history of auto-immune disease and can occur post viral infections.
When evaluating for hair loss, its important to ask the right questions to help us determine the cause so that we can help treat it effectively.
