Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) describes the symptoms and signs resulting from the effect of estrogen deficiency on the genitourinary tract, including the vagina, labia, urethra, and bladder.

As estrogen begins to decline it often results in symptoms like vaginal dryness, vaginal itching/burning, pain during sex, bleeding after sex, reduced arousal, orgasm or desire for sex, pain during urination, more urinary urgency, and more.

These symptoms are highly prevalent in the post-menopausal population, affecting 60-85% of women starting 1-6 years after menopause. Although this syndrome is highly prevalent, its very rarely talked about or treated. Studies have shown that 50% of women experiencing these symptoms never talk to their doctor about it. What's worse is that only 4% of affected women are actively using therapies to help them.

Despite these facts, GSM is a very treatable condition. There are excellent therapies that can help resolve these issues for women including vaginal moisturizers and estrogen therapy.
