Hair loss is a common concern among women of all ages, severely impacting quality of life and self-esteem of those involved. It can occur quickly or slowly over time, and can be caused by a variety of different factors including infections, medications, stress, and hormones.

Hair loss due to hormones often happens when there is a major shift in hormonal levels. This is seen in women who are transitioning to peri-menopause/menopause, or have recently given birth, or in women who have discontinued their birth control. In all cases, hormones are changing in a significant way which can be a stressor on the body causing hair loss. This form of hair loss tends to happen fairly quickly and is noticed throughout the entire scalp.

Hair loss can also occur to due 'male' sex hormones, particularly testosterone and other androgens, being too high. This form of hair loss is evident in women suffering from PCOS and can present with slower hair loss in the frontal and vertex area of the scalp, acne, and unwanted hair growth.

Patients dealing with hormonal hair loss are not well supported by conventional medicine. Naturopathic medicine is a good solution for these patients as we can aid in proper assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the root cause to help restore hair density and volume.
