Lupus is a common auto-immune condition among women where the immune system attacks many major organs and tissues in the body including the heart, brain, skin, and kidneys. Although severe disease can often be avoided with medications, many patients with lupus experience persistent fatigue despite being medicated, and even in disease remission.
The cause of this persistent fatigue in lupus patients is multi-dimensional, meaning that there are many things that contribute to it. Some underlying reasons behind lupus fatigue include inflammation, pain, poor sleep quality, use of steroids, anemia, reduced physical activity, vitamin D deficiency, depression, anxiety, hypothyroidism, and so on. This is why relying on medications to improve lupus fatigue will not work.
To help resolve this persistent fatigue we must do a thorough assessment to identify all of the potential causes. Once we've identified all the potential causes, we can use many tools including nutrition, lifestyle, supplements, and herbs to help improve energy and optimize quality of life.
