A subset of women experience migraines before and during their period. Often this is chalked off as typical migraines and no attention is given to the role of estrogen in contributing to the migraines.
However, what we often see is that women who have true menstrual migraines and are treated for it will have an improvement in their migraine severity during the month but not during their period.
That's because menstrual migraines are triggered by the loss of estrogen at the end of the cycle leading up to the period. This loss of estrogen can trigger pain pathways to start firing leading to migraine onset.
Estrogen therapy can be very helpful to help reduce the blunt of the loss of estrogen during the luteal phase and therefore reduce the severity and frequency of migraines during a women's period. This is just one of the many treatments that are available to help improve migraines.
If your migraines have not been responding to treatment and you notice a correlation to your period, you may have menstrual migraines.
