Nutrient deficiencies and depression

Major depressive disorder (MDD), otherwise known as depression, is a common mood disorder among the general population and tends to increase in rate among women with hormonal disorders and women in the peri-menopausal and menopausal population. Patients with depression will commonly experience symptoms like a reduced interest in doing things they previously liked, a sense of hopelessness, lack of energy, disturbances in sleep, agitation, and difficulty with concentration. These disturbances often impact quality of life and ability to perform normal tasks.

Depression is conventionally treated with anti-depressants which can provide very helpful relief. However, the treatment of depression should be tackled holistically, starting with evaluating nutritional deficiencies that could be contributing to the issue. The two most common nutritional deficiencies that can contribute to depression are iron and vitamin D.

Research has shown that adults who are deficient in iron are more likely to experience symptoms of depression, performing cognitive tasks, and delayed memory and response times. Very similarly, patients who have low vitamin D levels are more likely to experience a greater severity of mood disturbances. That's why its important to test and treat these nutrients to optimal levels to help remove barriers to healing.
