Eczema can seriously lower people's quality of life. Everyday there are millions of people who have to deal with dry, itchy, painful skin breakouts. Their told not to scratch at it, and are given steroids that only give them temporary relief. No wonder why so many people come to naturopaths to help them deal with their eczema naturally! The good news is we can provide excellent care in this area.
Here is how i usually approach treating eczema,,,
1) Look into food sensitivities - Eczema is a disease of inflammation. When people are sensitive to foods, the immune system reacts to it, and causes more inflammation. It's important to lower the inflammatory burden of the body by removing any foods that we are reacting to. When food allergies are correctly identified and removed, people usually feel a huge relief from their eczema!
2) Keep the skin hydrated - If the skin is not continually hydrated, we run the risk of having it crack and bleed. It's important to keep the skin moisturized with moisturizers that have a lot of oil, and a small amount of water. Coconut oil has been researched and shown to be excellent in reducing the severity of eczema breakouts. I usually recommend patients to take a warm oatmeal bath, and then rub themselves down with coconut oil after.
3) Consume more healthy fats and water! Healthy fats like avocado, nuts, fish, seeds give our body the things it needs to keep the skin hydrated and moisturized.
4) Test vitamin D! Patients with eczema tend to have low vitamin D levels. Optimizing vitamin D is key to help preventing future flareups[1]
5) Add anti-inflammatories - We need to reduce the inflammatory burden!! We can do this by adding fish oils, turmeric, and other anti-inflammatory herbs/supplements.
6) Manage the stress response - A lot of people find that their eczema flares up when their stress. It's important to manage the stress response by adding herbs or other minerals/vitamins that can help reduce stress.
